I am interested in exploring how grasses take up iron from the soil and discovering new genes in iron homeostasis, so I study genes that are involved in iron acquisition by analyzing yellow stripe mutants in maize. Knowing the players in iron acquisition would help to provide new strategies for biofortification in staple crops.

I have very recently discovered that a substance found in phloem exudates of Fe deficient plants can initiate iron deficiency regulated gene expression (IDRGE) in roots. This strongly indicates the presence of a positive long-distance signal (shoot to root) that promotes Fe uptake during Fe deficiency, and opens the possibility of identifying the molecule(s) that shoots use to signal iron deficiency to the roots.

I am currently conducting an experiment to overexpress YSL1 in the phloem companion cells of Arabidopsis. These cells are responsible for loading materialsso that they can be transported to nutrient poor locations like growing leaves and developing seeds. I want to explore whether increased YSL expression in phloem companion cells would lead to increased iron accumulation.

As a rotation student, I am performing localization assays on Arabidopsis thaliana to elucidate localization of YSL1 and YSL3 gene expression by using fluorescence microscopy, various mutant lines and fluorescent probes.

I'm a first year PhD rotation student studying the regulation of iron uptake using the grass species Zea mays. I'm interested in testing the hypothesis that a long-distant signal from shoots to roots is responsible for the regulation of iron uptake.
