Snowflake's $1000 tail

In 2014 we had a severe thunderstorm that took down a neighbor's tree. In the confusion I rushed out the kitchen door and did not notice our cat Snowflake following behind. The screen door slammed on her tail and in pulling she debrided her tail. On going to the emergency room at 11 PM that evening we were given the alternatives (1) amputate the tail. (2) replace the tail skin on the tail and allow it to heal. The repair of the tail was significantly more expensive than the amputation but the tail was this cats crowning glory.

We chose to have the tail repaired. It cost $900 and a week later after I had trimmed her cone too severely so that she could now chew on her tail stitches, it cost another $100 to replace the cone. So, a year later the tail has grown out and Snowflake has an amazing $1000 tail.

Lesson: Be sure that you do not forget your cats needs during an emergency. They can not open and close their own doors and you would be sure your child passed through the door safely ... your cat should be given similar guardianship.

Repaired tail and rehab ... cone trimmed so she can reach her food, but not her tail!
Outside again next summer with re-fur-bished tail!
