Defining the scope of our subcommittee's objectives.
A ranging discussion of exactly what our objectives should be
resulted in several areas of potential information:
1. Commissioning a SARIS survey on student access.
- Ed Cutting will approach the SARIS staff about planning a survey.
- What are the available computer facilities used by students?
- Does every student need a computer?
- Are students not able to access computer resources?
- To what extent are Departmental Computer Facilities providing access?
- Are students in branch libraries able to access information as well as those
in the D'Boise Library?
2. Are the Departmental planning and solutions to students access an adequate and
appropriate solution for many students?
- The possibility was suggested of enlisting the Deans and Tom Robinson (Vice
Chancellor of Student Affairs) to provide names of experts on computer use in
their domains. These experts would then be used to establish the needs for
computers for the present and future among the students of those colleges. We
will seek the approval of our parent FSC&EC Committee on whether they or we
should solicit this help.
3. A search for solutions to student access issues at other state as well as private
universities around the nation could provide useful insights.
Future meetings
Tentatively we have decided to meet regularly once a month at the above location,
one week after the parent committee meeting.
The meeting adjourned at 1:08 PM
