Arthropod acoustic communication is a primary focus at the Patek Lab. Here you can find our acoustically oriented research projects along with sounds and video of spiny lobsters (Palinuridae) and mantis shrimp (Stomatopoda).
Speakers and Signers: a talk by Sheila Patek about vibration in the sea
In an informal setting, the Speakers and Signers conference exposed a deaf and hearing audience to a wide range of approaches to vibration, including art, design, science and engineering. Sheila Patek speaks here in 2009 with an American Sign Language interpreter. This talk focuses on the experience of sound in the sea by supposedly "deaf" organisms - marine crustaceans. The audience's space includes a special floor that vibrates, so that the deaf audience can experience sound and vibrations presented during the talks.
