An old male Eastern Box Turtle (Terrapene carolina carolina)
Once a fairly common species in Massachusetts this turtle is now rare and is listed as a Species of Special Concern by the Massachusetts Natural Heritage and Endangered Species Program.
This rare species has a scattered distribution in the Valley and is often the focus of rare species surveys conducted by herpetologists in the area.
