Curriculum Vitae

Education
M.S., Northeastern University, 2005
B.S., University of Michigan, 1998

(Last updated Spring 2004.) As of the 2003/2004 academic year, I am working on a Masters in Biology at Northeastern University, with Rich Marsh as my advisor. In the mean time, I have continued to collaborate with Steve and Randy on an analysis of the classroom observations collected as a part of the Biology Course Redesign Project.

(Last updated June 2003, from here on down.)

I work with Steve Brewer in the BCRC as an Instructional Technology Associate on the Biology Course Redesign Project sponsored by the Center for Academic Transformation. My responsibilities include the design and implementation of the Biology Department Course Resources, the study and support of Classtalk in large lecture halls, and the design of the Biology Department web site. These three major areas, and more, are described below.

Current Projects

Redesign of Course Resources
During the summer of 2001, Steve Brewer and I collaborated with Elizabeth Connor, Randy Phillis, and Steve Goodwin to redesign the Biology Department's web-based course resources as a part of the Pew Course Redesign Project. We piloted the new design during the Fall 2001 semester in Introductory Biology. Taking what was learned from the pilot study, we revised the design for the Spring 2002 semester and made the new course resources available to faculty in the Departments of Biology, Microbiology, and Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. The new design was adopted for use in 16 different courses across all three departments. Additional components and further refinements are planned for the Fall 2002 semester.

This summer, we also plan to embark on a major redesign of the Duck on-line quizzing system. The redesign will be integrated with the look-and-feel of the course resources as well as provide a new facility for question sharing among faculty (a.k.a., Hawk). Working with Buzz Hoagland from Westfield State College, we will also be integrating the Data Aggregation Project into the course resources for the Fall 2002 semester.

Support of ClassTalk
An important focus of the Pew Course Redesign Project has been to provide in-class support of key technologies, such as Classtalk. The redesign of the Introductory Biology course was built around the idea that instructional technologies can and should be used to enhance the value of face-to-face instruction. Classtalk has been used to this end in Introductory Biology since the Spring 1999 semester, with class sizes ranging from 180 to 270 students. For the Spring 2002 semester, we began extending support for Classtalk beyond Introductory Biology. For the first time, Elsbeth Walker used Classtalk, as well as the new course resources, to teach General Genetics (100 students).

Redesign of Biology Department Web Site
In addition to working on the Pew project, I worked with the Biology Department web committee during the summer of 2001 to redesign the Biology Department web site. The redesign was successfully completed and deployed for the Fall 2001 semester. Though the majority of the redesign has been completed, I continue to serve on the Department's web committee. Most recently, Steve and I redesigned the Biology Computer Resource Center (BCRC) web site to match the design of the new department pages. Steve and I also worked with Bernard Rubinstein to design the new web site for the Biology Greenhouses.
