| Little Lameshur bay was where we had our first snorkeling experience on St. John. On our first morning on the island we walked down to Little Lameshur and were instructed on how to use our snorkel gear by Adam Summers. Once we were geared up and comfortable we swam out into the bay. When we were out a ways we practiced diving so that we could experience the sights below us a little more closely. While the wildlife in this area is not quite as exciting as in Great Lameshur Bay, it was a good spot for us to begin to experience the aquatic life of St. John. | ![]() A picturesque view of Little Lameshur Bay |

That is not to say that there is nothing to look at in Little Lameshur Bay. We ran across many interesting organisms. One of the local inhabitants was a Reef Squid. It looked very much like a cuttle fish, it had a broad body and a undulating fin which surrounded it's body. Another interesting characteristic of this organism is that it has the ability to change colors. It uses this ability to communicate to other reef squid and other organisms in the water. As we watched colors flowed across its body like an exotic liquid. I was really fascinated with it. We also found a Southern Stingray who was resting on the bottom of the bay. A few of the students even got a chance to touch it before it moved away from us. |
| Meanwhile, while the class was out swimming and exploring, Doug Smith and Sean Werle, were turning over rocks near the shoreline and finding some interesting invertebrates. One of which turned out to be a saltwater Platyhelminth worm. Most of the really interesting things are under rocks. You just have to be brave enough to turn them over. Watch your fingers! Overall our first snorkel outing was a tremendous success. Everyone got to hone their snorkeling skills and experience being in the water with some really exotic sea life. The class was deemed worth to progress to a snorkel site with a little more character to it. That afternoon after lunch we went out to snorkel in Great Lameshur Bay. | ![]() Mugging for the camera |
