The day we went to Saltpond bay was a full one. We checked out the salt pond, hiked the Ram's Head, and snorkeled out in the bay. It was awesome. We began the day by hiking out to the bay. When we arrived we promptly headed over to check out what was living in the salt pond. The salt pond is a unique environment due to the fact that it has a tremendously high salinity level.
Saltpond Bay

Sean and Geoff investigate the salt pond
The organisms which live under those conditions have evolved ways of coping with the salt to take advantage of that particular ecological niche. When the class had been there two years previously the pond had been overflowing with life in the form of aquatic beetles, various crustaceans, and very large earwigs.
When we arrived at the pond the situation had taken a 180 degree turn. The life in the pond was almost nil. The beetles and crabs which had been there previously, were now gone. All that we could find in the pond was some sort of red microorganism which was thick in the water. The earwigs which live on the shore were still around though. We thought that maybe the last time the class had been there the local populations of organisms had reached the top of a growth curve. In the time between then and our trip the levels of life in the pool had crashed possibly due to overpopulation.
Hi

Bye
After looking at the pond we went back to the beach and ate lunch. After lunch we hiked the Ram's Head and upon our return from the hike we went snorkeling in the bay. The snorkeling was excellent as it was everywhere on the island. Everyone by now was very proficient at snorkeling and we were all able to get some great views of fish. One of the more memorable visuals we saw was a big school of Blue Tang. I was also able to dive down to a crevice and get a good look at a very large Bar Jack. We swam out a long ways on that trip. We followed the left side of the bay all the way out and then back in again. Overall we had an excellent day and we all slept like rocks that night.
