An emerging approach in plant science is the use of association mapping to discover genes effecting certain traits. Beyond gene function, we further understand adaptation processes as well as the nature of the mechanisms for genetic variation. The Caicedo Laboratory is interested in the genetic basis of adaptation, as well as the population and genomic context in which adaptive evolution occurs. Very little is known about Brachypodium population structure or the polyploid complex, making this model system a rich area of exploration.
