Sue Leschine and Jeff Blanchard presented at the Clostridium 11 conference

Sue Leschine and Jeff Blanchard participated in Clostridium 11, a biennial conference held Oct. 3-6, 2010 in San Diego. Sue delivered the keynote and Jeff gave an invited talk in the Genomics session; both talks focused on Clostridium phytofermentans as a model system for converting plant biomass to biofuels and other bioproducts.

Qteros, UMass get biofuels patent

Qteros, Inc. in Marlborough and the University of Massachusetts Amherst have patented the fermentation method they use to make biofuel, a plant-based alternative to gasoline, using the so-called Q Microbe.

Team maps genome for potential fuel source

It took the work of more than 100 researchers, including Samuel Hazen, assistant professor of Biology, for the journal Nature last week to be able to publish the entire genome of the model grass commonly known as purple false brome.

Brachypodium distachyon genome published in Nature

The International Brachypodium Initiative describes the genome sequence of Brachypodium distachyon, a wild grass. The consortium suggests that their genome sequence, along with the grass' rapid life cycle and ease of cultivation, will help brachy to become a model system for the development of novel energy sources and food crops.
