Researchers Travel to the Depths of the Pacific Ocean
Isenberg Scholar Award 2009-2010April 2009: Supratim Mukherjee, a Microbiology Ph.D. student, has been selected to receive an Isenberg Scholar Award for the 2009-2010 academic year. In 1994 the fund was established by Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Isenberg to encourage students whose studies demonstrate commitment to the integration of science and/or engineering with Management. The 2009-2010 recipients of the award will be recognized at a banquet on April 30, 2009. Congratulations, Supratim! |
Stuart Awarded Grant from Avon FoundationJune 2009: Dr. Elizabeth Stuart, Associate Professor of Microbiology, has been awarded a two-year grant from the Avon Foundation for her research project, "The Presence, Prevalence and Impact of Intracellular Chlamydia in Cells from Breast Milk." Dr. Stuart will be working on this project along with Co-PI's, Dr. Kathleen Arcaro, Associate Professor Veterinary & Animal Sciences and Dr. Douglas Anderton, Professor of Sociology. David V. Pollack, Ph.D.
May 2009: On Friday, May 22, at the University of Massachusetts Graduate Commencement ceremony, David V. Pollack was awarded his Ph.D. posthumously. The ceremony was attended by David's friends and family members who accepted the degree on his behalf. David V. Pollack passed away of natural causes on December 11, 2008. At the time of his death David was completing work on his Ph.D. in the lab of Elizabeth Stuart and was scheduled to defend his dissertation on January 9, 2009. |
Webley Recipient of Student Choice AwardApril 2009: Wilmore Webley, Assistant Professor of Microbiology, has been selected as the recipient of the Residential First Year Experience (RFYE) Student Choice Award. The award is given to a member of the UMass community for making a significant impact on the lives of first-year students. Dr. Webley will be honored by Residence Life Staff at a banquet on May 3, 2009. Congratulations! Biddle Selected to Attend Microbial Diversity Summer CourseApril 2009: Congratulations to Amy Biddle, Microbiology Ph.D. student, has been selected to participate in the 2009 Microbial Diversity course at the Marine Biology Laboratory in Woods Hole, MA as a first year graduate student. This prestigious six-and-a-half-week course is limited to 20 participants that are typically senior graduate students or postdocs. The Microbial Diversity summer course has been run for the past 38 years and has become the training ground for the next generation of microbial ecologists. Well done! |
