The Microbiology Department has extended the search for a new Department Head. Derek Lovley stepped down on June 30, 2004, after serving as Department Head for 7 years. Steve Sandler is currently acting as Interim Department Head.

The Department of Microbiology at the University of Massachusetts Amherst (http://www.bio.umass.edu/micro/) invites applications and nominations for the position of Head of the Department of Microbiology. We are seeking an individual with an outstanding research record who can provide energetic and creative leadership for the Department. The candidate's research program should be within the broadly defined area of Microbiology.
The Department currently has 13 faculty representing the diversity of subdisciplines within microbiology and a proven record of excellence in teaching and research. Opportunities exist to develop strong collaborations with faculty in the Five College Consortium (Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke and Smith Colleges and the University of Massachusetts), the University of Massachusetts Medical School at Worcester, and the Bay State Medical Center.
