:: Scientist Studies Deep-Sea Hydrothermal Vents ::

August 2006: Microbiology Assistant Professor Jim Holden will join an oceanographic research expedition to deep-sea hydrothermal vents in the northeastern Pacific Ocean in August and September of 2006 that will involve the deep-sea submarine Alvin.  The purpose of the expedition is to characterize the microorganisms found within deep-sea sulfide deposits that contain volcanically-derived hydrothermal fluids that reach temperatures up to 400 degrees C and to define metabolic processes that occur at life's upper temperature limit.  The study is funded by a grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
