:: Researcher Receives Grant to Study Microorganisms
at Deep-Sea Vent Site ::

August 2007: Dr. James Holden, an Assistant Professor in Microbiology, received a three-year grant from the National Science Foundation to study hyperthermophilic microorganisms from a deep-sea hydrothermal vent site off the coast of Washington state.  He is the lead investigator on the grant with three other investigators from the University of Washington.  Dr. Holden will lead sampling expeditions at the site using research submarines in the summers of 2008 and 2009.  The goal of the study is to understand the relationship between vent geochemistry and hyperthermophile distribution and to develop quantitative models of microbial alteration of hydrothermal fluids.
