:: Michele Klingbeil Receives NIH Grant ::

August 2005: Michele Klingbeil, Assistant Professor of Microbiology, has recently been awarded a new four year grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for a project entitled "Trypanosomatid Mitochondrial DNA Polymerases." Trypanosomes are ancient protozoan parasites that cause disease in humans and animals.  Current drug treatments are inadequate, often toxic and no vaccines are available.  The Klingbeil Lab is investigating the roles of four novel DNA polymerases in the replication of the unique trypanosome mitochondrial DNA network known as kinetoplast DNA.  Information for their studies will provide an opportunity to develop new strategies for better drug treatments.
