:: Microbiologist Makes an Electrifying Discovery ::

June 2005: Derek Lovley, Distinguished University Professor, and a group of researchers have discovered that Geobacter produces pilin-like filaments that function as nanowires. This finding helps explain how microorganisms clean up groundwater and produce electricity from renewable resources. This discovery also has the potential for the development of nanoelectronic devices, sensors, and microbially based fuel cells. The findings of this study are reported in the June 23 issue of Nature.
