:: Microbiology Retreat Held February 2, 2008 ::

February: The Department of Microbiology held its annual retreat on Saturday, February 2, 2008, at the UMass Campus Center. Dr. Kevin Finneran, Microbiology Alumnus (Ph.D. '02) and Assistant Professor of Environmental Engineering at the University of Illionois Urbana-Champaign, was the keynote speaker. The Retreat also featured research presentations by Dr. Michele Klingbeil, Assistant Professor of Microbiology, and Eve Rungrassamee, Ph.D. Candidate.

Michele Klingbeil was presented the Thomas G. Lessie Distinguished Lectureship Award. The award is made annually by the Microbiology Graduate Student Group to a faculty member for their impact on teaching at the graduate level. Also awarded was the Curtis B. Thorne “Carry On” Award. Nicholas Renzette, Ph.D. Candidate was the recipient of this year's award. The award was established in 2008 in memory of Professor Emeritus Curtis Thorne and the contributions he made to UMass Microbiology from 1966-1994.
