I am working on an interdisciplinary project that studies the biogeochemistry of ferric iron and sulfate reduction in extreme acidic environments. Davis Mine, an abandoned pyrite mine in Charlemont, MA, is an acid mine drainage site being used as the model for this study. The goal of this project is to be able to propose methods of bioremediation for other sites in the future. My research aims to analyze the microbial community of Davis Mine using molecular techniques. All work is funded by the National Science Foundation through the Biocomplexity program.

A photo of pyrite from the mine site. Pyrite was mined from 1882 to 1912 to make sulfuric acid.
