Eastern Box Turtles

Eastern box turtle

Liz Willey studies the ecology of eastern box turtles (Terrapene c. carolina) in central Massachusetts. Eastern box turtles inhabit upland forests along throughout the eastern U.S., and they are believed to be declining throughout their range as a result of habitat loss and collection for the pet trade. Box turtles reach their northern extent in Massachusetts where they are listed as a Species of Special Concern. Over the past 3 years Liz has followed over 80 individuals at seven sites throughout central Massachusetts using radio-telemetry to evaluate their movement patterns, habitat requirements, and threats to survival. Using the results of her field research, she will assess the effects of fragmentation on box turtles, make recommendations for land acquisition priorities and habitat management strategies, and develop a conservation plan for the species in the region.
