Here is an email from a faculty member working with the fish research
center in Turner's Falls. He's working to build a fish counter that can
log data from fish as they pass through the fish ladder. He's got an
embedded linux system that has 24 serial ports that he wants to use, but
is running into problems with the C program he's written to do the
counts. He's looking for a student that would like to get their teeth
into a real problem.

If you'd like to work on this using your time in the BCRC, let me know.

Cheers!

Hi Steve:

Thanks for the offer to hook me up with an eager programmer!

FYI Here's the system I'm working with:

http://wiki.embeddedarm.com/wiki/TS-COMBOX

I have some code written that seems to be close. I was able to run the
first 8 ports OK, but ran into problems when I tried to scale up to 20.
My program needs debugging and also several things could be done to
improve the interface. Then I want to stress test the system and make
sure it's ready for prime time. Big expensive projects are relying on
this, so it's worth something to me to get right.

Thanks!

Ted

PS note I'm using my USGS email---best way to reach me.
