1. Tilapia larvae developed higher density of MR cells with larger apical surfaces
(wavy convex type) to boost Cl uptake in Cl deficient water.
2. Increase of apical membrane of MR cells provides larvae fast regulation of Cl
before newly MR cells differentiate.
3. The distinct types of apical surface may represent different phases of MR cells
which owning different efficiency in ion transport. Wavy convex type
with the largest surface owns the highest efficiency, deep hole with
the smallest apical surface displays the lowest efficiency, and shallow basin type
is the intermediate type.
4. Base on these evidences, we proposed the model that MR cells is functionally
plastic, which enlarge or constrict their apical surface for ion active transport
depending on the efficiency they need.
