Adult fruit fly Drosophila

Schwartz, L.

The intersegmental muscles (ISM) from the tobacco hawkmoth Manduca sexta rapidly and selectively die at the end of metamorphosis and are a wonderful model for the study of programmed cell death. To give a sense of scale, an adult fruit fly Drosophila, is walking down the length of one muscle fiber. Manduca is a wonderful system for physiology and molecular biology, while Drosophila is a great system for complimentary genetic studies.
