Description:

This phylogenetic tree illustrates relationships among New World leaf-nosed bats. Colors represent different subfamilies. Most subfamilies are characterized by specific dietary adaptations that are associated with the diversity of face shapes seen in the portraits.

Methods:

The tree was developed using Baysian methods applied to a combination of mitochondrial, nuclear and ribosomal genes. It was dated with 9 fossils and the timing of the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary.
