RNA is now widely appreciated as much more than simply encoding proteins. RNA molecules can fold into protein-like structures, with full function and specificity. This rapidly expanding field spans from biology, to chemistry, to engineering.
1) Students will work with graduate students to design and test model systems in which to study RNA folding pathways. In particular, the Martin lab is developing a system to study cotranscriptional RNA folding. Tools include gel electrophoresis and fluorescence spectroscopy.
