These instructions are for Windows. None of this software is available for the Macintosh.

Installing WinMDI

  1. In your browser, File, New window so you have one window to view this document, and another to download the program. Copy the location (URL) from the first window to the second. Switch back and forth with the taskbar at the bottom of your screen.
  2. Click here to download WinMDI.
  3. At the Scripps site, click on the download link for Win95/98/NT.
  4. When the file saving dialog box comes up, select an appropriate folder in which to put the file. I recommend c:\temp, a standard place for temporary files. (After you install WinMDI, you can delete the installer file we are now downloading). Notice whether c:\temp is empty -- if it is not empty, you may prefer to create a new empty folder so later you'll know what you can delete (see last step below). To create a new folder, in Windows Explorer (on your Start menu under Programs), select File, New, Folder, name the folder (e.g. temp2) and proceed to use it for the steps below.
  5. Open Windows Explorer and find the newly downloaded file, e.g. c:\temp\wm28w95.exe and double-click on it (which runs it).
  6. A DOS window will open and show that several files have been extracted from the master installer file. Close the DOS window.
  7. In Windows Explorer, find and double-click on the newly created file, in c:\temp, named setup.exe. This will run the installer.
  8. When you get to a screen which shows 'custom' vs. 'typical', select typical. Otherwise, just click on Yes, Next, etc. as instructed in the installer until it finishes.
  9. Now click on your Start button (lower right), and under Programs, you will find a WinMDI folder, containing the WinMDI application. Click on it to run it.
  10. If you wish, you can now delete all files in c:\temp (or temp2).

Installing SEM

SEM is a simple program to calculate the mean, standard deviation, standard error of the mean (SEM), etc. from a two or more values entered from the keyboard. It looks like this (boldface numbers entered by hand):
Data/command? 12.7 14.2 9.9
N=3  Mean=12.2667 SD=2.1825 SEM=1.2601 (10.3% of Mean)
  1. Download SEMZIP.EXE, saving it in a temporary location such as c:\temp.
  2. Open Windows Explorer (Start, Programs, Windows Explorer), find the file SEMZIP.EXE and double-click it. A WinZip Self-Extractor dialog will appear -- simply click the UnZip button. (Don't change any of the other options.) Close the WinZip dialog. (The program SEM.EXE has been saved in a new folder as c:\sem\sem.exe.)
  3. Examine your desktop. You should find a new MS-DOS shortcut named "sem.exe". Double click it to run SEM.
  4. You may delete the file SEMZIP.EXE if you wish.
