• Barcode
  Each organism submited to a protocol is assigned a barcode that is attached to the observations recorded on that organism.
• CL: The distance in mm from the eye socket to the posterior end of the carapace dorsal medial suture. The CL is considered the standard length that is used to determine whether a lobster is legal to catch and sell in a market.
• K: The number of ESD lobsters identified at a trawl site among the N lobsters examined at that trawl site.
• Lat, Lon: The Latitude and Longitude of the start of the standard 20-minute-on-the-bottom trawl.
• Condition
  • NA - data not collected
  • 0 - male with no condition info.
  • 1 - female with eggs
  • -1 - female with no eggs.
• SSI on Land: Shell Sickness Index determined on Land.
  • 0 - no shell disease.
  • 1 - between 0 and 10% surface involvement in shell disease.
  • 2 - between 10 and 50% surface involvement in shell disease.
  • 3 - between 50 and 100% surface involvement in shell disease.
• SSI at Sea: Shell Sickness Index determined at sea.
  Using the same scale as used for land index.
• Comments:
  • 'abdomen removed' to reduce the volumeof frozen material needed to transport the abdomen, legs and chela were often removed.
  • 'CL by ImageJ': When no CL was taken, a macro-image with its label could be used to estimate the CL using the measurement and callibration capability of ImageJ. The FSCS bar-code label is exactly 76 mm wide.
  • Valuable questionable false(+) examples were given a nominal SSI index of ESD at sea and frozen to be validated on land. These examples provide valuable illustrations for training in recognising ESD by observers at sea.
• NA refers to data not taken or not yet analyzed in the case of land processing.
• The design of the data collection protocols was done by Joe Kunkel in collaboration with NOAA NMFS colleagues John Galbraith and Jakub Kircun. Maine DMR Kathleen Reardon and Carl Wilson helped with review and comments on the protocol with respect to the Maine Lobster Survey.
