The Microbiology Graduate Student Group (MGSG) includes all students pursuing a masters or doctoral degree from the Department of Microbiology at UMass-Amherst.

The purpose of this organization is (1) fostering student involvement in and communication within the Microbiology program at The University of Massachusetts - Amherst, (2) creating an environment for student researchers to present their work and engage in scientific discourse, (3) encouraging participation in scientific conferences, (4) increasing the number of visiting speakers, and (5) promoting student participation in local, state and national ASM activities.

MGSG and students in Microbio 310 Honors Colloquium are organizing the first Microbiology Awareness Event on Friday, May 9, 2008 from 1:30-3:30 p.m. in N201-N202 Morrill IV.

Dr Michele Klingbeil was presented the Thomas G. Lessie Distinguished Lectureship Award by the graduate students at the Microbiology Retreat on February 2, 2008.

February, 2008 - Curtis B. Thorne “Carry On” Award

Nicholas Renzette was awarded the Curtis B. Thorne “Carry On” Award for his exceptional academic achievements including two publications in Molecular Microbiology.
